turns out stock lawn tractors aren’t really built for doing burnouts in the yard.
I had it tied to a bush stump thinking it would be enough to get it out but i was wrong. i t just sat there and spun the tires which of course made the 10 y/o in me giggle. I may have done it more than once which stretched out the drive belt . Half way through my last mow, the drive belt repeatedly fell off the pullies and would need replacing.

This is why I am repairing 2 vintage lawnmowers...you can’t beat a gearbox with actual gears when you actually need to pull something with a lawnmower.

My dad has an old John Deere 317, from the mid 70s I believe. Its got a Kubota 17HP 2 cylinder boxer and a hydrostatic transmission. I know hes messed with it some, but I dont know exactly what. I suspect some carb & ignition work to pick up a pony or two, and hes boosted the drive pressure in the trans. The thing will pop wheelies and he went “snowblade to snowblade” with a 24 HP C raftsman tractor and pushed it up the street. Its not fast, but its got grunt!

How easy is it to drop the mower deck on yours? I have at least five separate connectors to remove plus the belt. A friend of mine said his only requires two disconnects plus the belt.

I’m sure some hydrostatic transmissions are robust, but man when I pull anything remotely heavy with my hydrostatic trans Lawnchief it sure seems to be strained under the load.

I bought the wife a brand new mower to learn on. 2.5 yrs later. She mowed around 3 acres. She has popped 3 tires, two blade belts, and 1 f150 back window. I would rather wrench on a mower than ride one.

Th e pins were easy to pull. I think it was 5 total and the blade belt. The drive belt required a little thinking as it required a specific order so you could have enough slack to pull over the next pulley

Yeah, I think it depends on a lot of factors and its going to vary between manufacturers. I know the Deere is a beast, but I dont know how much of that is inherent and how much is from dad messing with it.
